The COI Advocate Program

The COI Advocate Program is a group of volunteers and COI professionals who are reaching out to:

  • prevent abuse, discrimination or negligent treatment of people with disabilities;
  • promote and enhance the rights of people with disabilities;
  • encourage people with disabilities to make informed choices;
  • increase economic and social participation for people with disabilities in the community;
  • assist people with severe disabilities to participate equitably in community life;
  • increase the knowledge and understanding of people with disabilities, their families and carers about the rights of people with disabilities;
  • improve communication between people with disabilities and other members of the community; and
  • recognise, value and include families and carers, wherever possible and appropriate, in the support system for people with disabilities.

  • Systemic Advocacy

Advocates help in changing laws, regulations, policies, practices or organizational structures to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve greater independence, productivity and inclusion within the community and the workforce.

  • Self-Advocacy Training, Education and Outreach

Advocates identifies disability communities that are in need of receiving self-advocacy training, education and outreach. Advocates conduct focus groups, make presentations, act as mentors and meet with community leaders.
