Housing

Increasingly, more people with disabilities want to leave institutions and live in neighborhood communities.

Others reach an age where they want to live independent of their family - as long as adequate support is available. Yet finding a new home can raise complex issues for them and their families.

Staff members meet with families to develop a plan based on the preferences of the individual with a disability. Questions such as whether to live with a roommate and the size and location of a house or apartment are all important to decide. Bank financing is used to purchase and remodel homes to ensure full accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Many homes are financed through local banks and some are acquired through various bond issues.

Once in a new home, Community Options' staff members make certain the person becomes familiar with the new residence. Staff members also provide on-going support - 24 hours a day if necessary. The idea is to maximize independence, comfort and safety.

Grants from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have also allowed Community Options to support more and more people with disabilities every year. In total, Community Options has received over $5 million in HUD funding.
