About 300 runners took off at the sound of a horn Saturday morning for the 2026 Cupid’s Chase 5K in Chattanooga, raising money for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The annual race benefits Community Options Inc., a nonprofit that provides home support, transportation, and job assistance to individuals with disabilities.

“We were founded in 1989, so we always do the race around this time every year,” said Mercedes Owens, executive director of Community Options in Chattanooga. “All the money goes back to the people that we support, whether they need furniture, if they need clothes, any essential needs.”

Cupid’s Chase events were held in 49 cities nationwide Saturday, drawing more than 15,000 participants, organizers said.

Owens said she was especially grateful for the local turnout, given that the race fell on Valentine’s Day.

“At first, when I found out it was on Valentine’s Day, I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, what if no one shows up because they’re out having breakfast, lunch, dinner with their loved ones,’” Owens said. “But it’s great to see a big turnout, because our people do really need the support from Chattanooga, and we appreciate them very much.”

Organizers said proceeds from the race will stay local, helping cover essential items and services for the people Community Options supports.
