Silent No Longer Recognized as a National Bestseller

This fall, Community Options President and CEO, Robert Stack, released his inspiring memoir, Silent No Longer: Advancing the Fight for Disability Rights. Drawing on his 40 years of experience in the disability rights movement, Robert examines how institutionalization, outdated policies and profit-driven private equity interests have deprived millions of people with disabilities of the dignity and freedom they deserve. The book was recently recognized by “USA Today” and “Publisher’s Weekly” as a national bestseller.
To promote the book’s release, Robert has embarked on a speaking and media tour, sharing his message with diverse audiences. A highlight of the tour so far was an interactive book signing event in Dallas, Texas, moderated by Regional Vice President of Texas and New Mexico Samantha Cutler. The event drew advocates, service providers and community members eager to engage in a candid conversation about the future of disability rights.
Robert’s perspective has also been spotlighted in national media, including features in “CEO World,” “Stanford Social Innovation Review” and interviews with FOX 32 Chicago where his advocacy for people with disabilities has gained strong traction.
In addition, Robert has brought the discussion to higher education, delivering guest lectures at New York University, St. Mary’s University and College of Staten Island. These sessions focused on empowering the next generation of leaders, advocates and policymakers to challenge outdated systems and build more inclusive communities.

Back to TopRJ Mitte Inspires at the 20th Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

The ballroom at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill buzzed with excitement as more than 150 advocates, policymakers and leaders came together for Community Options’ 20th Annual Conference. The event, themed And Justice for All, united voices from across the country to focus on a shared mission: advancing inclusion, accessibility and equity for people with disabilities.
The highlight of the day came when RJ Mitte, actor and disability advocate best known for his role as Walter White Jr. on Breaking Bad, took the stage. Born with cerebral palsy, RJ shared his journey in Hollywood and beyond, weaving humor, honesty and determination into a message that moved the room.
“Inclusion isn’t about doing what’s easy,” RJ said. “It’s about doing what’s right; giving people the tools and the trust to show what they’re capable of.”
Attendees also heard from bipartisan panels featuring Congressional chiefs of staff and former administration officials, including John McCarthy, former Senior Advisor to President Joe Biden and Matt Mowers, former Senior White House Advisor in the Trump Administration. They shared candid insights on disability rights, workforce inclusion and Medicaid-funded services.
“The conference reflects our mission to ensure that persons with disabilities have the same opportunities to live and work as everyone else,” said Robert Stack, President and CEO of Community Options.
From RJ’s inspiring keynote to the engaging policy discussions, the event left attendees motivated and united in advancing a more inclusive future for all.
Back to TopCommunity Options Raises $1 Million at “We the People Gala”

Community Options celebrated a remarkable milestone at its We the People Gala, raising nearly $1 million to advance its mission of supporting people with disabilities through housing and employment. The event, held at the iconic National Building Museum, welcomed more than 300 people for an evening of purpose, celebration and generosity.
This year’s Gala also celebrated a meaningful milestone — ten years of Community Options’ work in Maryland, honoring a decade of expanding opportunities, independence and community inclusion for people with disabilities across the state. All Gala proceeds support the launch of Maryland’s first Daily Plan It, an innovative program that combines professional office space with integrated employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
“Serving as Chair of this year’s Gala Planning Committee was a true privilege,” said Cathy McManus. “Seeing our community come together to support the first Daily Plan It in Maryland was inspiring. This project will open new doors for people with disabilities and I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this vision possible.”
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Betty Pendler Awards, named in honor of the devoted parent and advocate. Since 1991, the award has recognized individuals who exemplify Community Options’ commitment to dignity and self-determination.
This years’ honorees included Mark Berkowsky, a principal architect and longtime supporter of employment programs for people with disabilities; Jonathan Will, a cherished member of the Washington Nationals whose dedication reflects the power of inclusive employment; and the late John Hager, Virginia’s first statewide elected official with a disability, celebrated for his lifelong advocacy and legacy of civic engagement.
“This incredible milestone reflects our shared commitment to creating opportunities and breaking barriers for people with disabilities,” said Robert Stack, President and CEO of Community Options. “Every dollar raised brings us closer to a more inclusive future where everyone can live, work and thrive with dignity.”
The success of the evening was made possible by the dedication of sponsors, donors and volunteers who believe in the transformative impact of Community Options’ work. From inspiring performances to heartfelt conversations, the gala was a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together in support of inclusion, equity and opportunity.
Back to TopA New Chapter Begins for Natali

What began as a series of rejections and roadblocks has transformed into a story of resilience and triumph for Natali of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Despite strong motivation to work, Natali struggled with job applications, complicated tax forms and interviews. With no prior work experience and a speech disability, he faced repeated rejections. During training, Community Options’ staff discovered his exceptional memory and attention to detail. These strengths suggested he could thrive in a structured work environment if training was tailored to match his learning style. Smith’s, a grocery store chain in Utah, became the work setting in which he would flourish.
“Natali worked hard on interview and self-advocacy skills,” said Shannon Wilkins, Regional Director of Employment Services. “After changing networking locations, he quickly got an interview at Smith’s and was hired on the spot.”
Now thriving at his first ever-job, Natali bags groceries, retrieves carts and sweeps the store. His confidence has grown and he greets customers warmly. His manager, Kim, praises his initiative and reliability, often noting how he identifies and completes tasks without being asked.
Natali’s journey towards employment shows how the right support and opportunity can turn challenges into success, proving the power of inclusive employment and personal resilience.
Back to TopAdam’s Day in the Shop with “Batman”

Adam recently had an exciting opportunity to explore his passion for auto mechanics through a hands-on work assessment with none other than “Batman,” John Seasock, two-time Monster Jam World Champion. John welcomed Adam into his shop at Black Rock Auto, sharing his expertise and giving him a firsthand experience in automotive repair.
During the session, Adam assisted with front wheel alignment, brake work and a full car inspection. The experience highlighted not only his enthusiasm for learning but also the importance of personalized employment assessments in uncovering individual strengths.
“This is what employment services are all about: creating real world opportunities that allow people to explore their interests and build confidence,” said Niki DeBartolo, State Director of Employment Services for Eastern Pennsylvania. “Seeing Adam thrive in this environment was inspiring and reinforces our commitment to connecting people with meaningful experiences.”
Adam left the shop with new skills, a boost in confidence and a memorable story about working alongside a Monster Jam legend. Experiences like this show how creativity and collaboration can open doors to employment success.

Community Options recently presented two employees, Ashley Gentry and Matt Lee, with the Intrepid Award in recognition of their extraordinary dedication to the Cookeville region and the individuals they support.
Ashley Gentry joined Community Options in 2014 and has been celebrated by colleagues as both a leader and an inspiration. Her commitment often goes far beyond expectations, stepping in as a nail technician, costume designer, nutritionist and chef for the people she serves. Every effort reflects her passion for providing high-quality care and ensuring dignity for each individual. As the proud mother of two children, including a 12-year-old daughter with a disability, Ashley shared, “I give my best because I hope that one day, if my daughter ever needs support, she will receive the same level of care and compassion.”
Matt Lee has been with Community Options since April 2024. His generous and outgoing nature makes him an ideal match for his homebody clients who often need encouragement to get out of the house and explore nature.
Matt is always thinking of creative ways to keep his clients active, such as taking them hiking at Fall Creek Falls or tracking down Spider-Man during special appearances in Cookeville.
Matt is the proud father of an 18-year-old son who lives in Ohio. He enjoys playing guitar, restoring old cars and turning wood into beautiful works of art. Known for always having a smile on his face, he brings positive energy everywhere he goes. For Matt, providing support is not just a job, it is a calling.
“Ashley and Matt embody the heart of our mission,” said Shana Gago, Executive Director in Cookeville. “Their creativity, resilience and dedication inspire all of us. They do not just provide care, they create opportunities for joy, growth and independence every single day.”
