Community Options Awarded Grant to Renovate Homes for People with Disabilities

June 18, 2021 | Press Release.pdf

Harrisburg, PA – Community Options was awarded a $61,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Housing and Finance Agency (PHFA) to rehabilitate two homes for people with disabilities Lehigh County.

The grant award was announced by Governor Tom Wolf as part of the PA Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) fund, a statewide effort to improve access to affordable housing.

“Finding housing that is accessible for people with disabilities can be extremely challenging,” said PHFA Executive Director and CEO Robin Wiessmann. “We’re pleased the PHARE program could fund the rehabilitation of these two properties in Whitehall Township so the residents will be able to live independently in housing they can afford.”

Community Options is a national nonprofit that provides housing and employment for people with disabilities. The grant funds will be used to rehabilitate two community-based homes in Whitehall Township. Accessible features will be added to the homes, including a roll-in shower and improved flooring.

Community Options operates small, community-based homes for people with disabilities. Most of the homes support just two to three individuals, ensuring everyone the opportunity to live as independently as possible. Many individuals supported by Community Options have significant disabilities and require 24-hour care from highly trained Direct Support Professionals.

Community Options supports about 700 people with disabilities in housing and employment programs in Pennsylvania, including 26 in Lehigh County.
