Community Options to Open New Day Habilitation Program in Amarillo

PRINCETON, NJ (September 4, 2018) — Community Options, Inc. of Amarillo announces the Grand Opening of its new Day Habilitation facility, located at 3010 SW 27th. Community Options, Inc. is a nationally based nonprofit (IRS 501(c)(3) certified) organization incorporated in 1989 and headquartered in Princeton, NJ. Community Options serves thousands of individuals with disabilities throughout 11 states; Arizona, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah. The Amarillo location was established to provide support services to individuals with disabilities in the Texas Panhandle.

Day Habilitation programs are designed to enhance daily living skills, vocational and community skills through volunteerism and community integration. With the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce on hand, the program will officially open with a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 17 at 10:30 a.m. The program is expected to support approximately 50 people under a staff of 11 employees.

“Community Options Amarillo is opening the doors to a new site location to provide easier access, more space and hopes to involve the community in visiting us,” said Community Options Amarillo Executive Director, Nicole Britt. “We’re also looking to assist the community with volunteer and potential employment opportunities.”

Community Options supports people to actualize their potential, acquire new skills, develop meaningful relationships, contribute to their communities, build self-esteem and enjoy new experiences. The Amarillo office supports support 75 individuals in Amarillo, while 437 individuals are served in all of Texas.

Computer room for clients to work on resumes, do research, apply for jobs. A sensory therapy room for clients with behavioral needs. Each room caters to the needs of the various developmental disabilities of their clients.

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) – Community Options’ new location aims to provide new and improved services for those with developmental disabilities.

“We’re very happy to be in a community setting,” said executive director, Nicole Britt. “That has open space, that has a few more windows, that has different views of classrooms and an increase in the ability to have a computer room here as well as a room that allows people that are total care in wheelchairs to have more access to get out of those chairs and to move around.”

The new program facility will have different rooms that appeal to their clients different disabilities.

Britt said it’s all a part of their plan to help their clients get in touch with the surrounding community.

“It gives them more access in regards to having the opportunity to be around other businesses to be with the people in the community that are walking down the street, being able to talk to them,” she said. “Again, it’s just a good sense of feeling like they are part of community.”

“We want to encourage people in the community to stop by if they like,” said Britt. “If they have anything they’d like for us to do to assist them in volunteering with our churches or agencies as well as if there is anything that they would like to come to us. Always looking for interns who have interest in the disability population to come by and possibly visit or volunteer and we’d be happy to have anyone come in.”
