Cupid’s Chase 5k will be held Feb. 14 at Onondaga Lake Park.
“This is truly a unique event, as it is held in 49 cities across 12 states on the same day,” Jodi Burkinshaw, associate executive director of Community Options, Inc., said. “We’re hoping to see more couples registered and celebrating this year because of the holiday, in addition to those that might be in search of connection.”
Participants can expect much more than a typical 5K.
Runners receive the ever-popular Cupid-themed T-shirts labeled “Available” or “Unavailable” on the back, creating a fun, lighthearted atmosphere.
A DJ will keep energy high throughout the morning behind the Griffin Visitor Center, with an awards ceremony, raffles, free goody bags, and snacks following the race.
Sponsors including Monster and Honda City will be on hand to support the festivities.
The impact of Cupid’s Chase go far beyond race day.
All funds raised in Syracuse remain local, directly benefiting people already enrolled in Community Options’ programs or expanding services in Onondaga County neighborhoods.
Recently, the organization placed two individuals who could no longer live safely at home into small community-based homes where they now thrive with independence, dignity, and skilled support.
“We believe in the dignity of every person, and in the freedom of all people to experience the highest degree of self-determination,” Burkinshaw said. “Our unique individuals have the same hopes and dreams as anyone; the only difference is they need a helping hand to achieve their goals.”
This year’s event offers an extra incentive: the first 5,000 people to register receive a free copy of “Silent No Longer,” a new book by Community Options founder and CEO Robert Stack, with 100% of proceeds supporting the organization’s mission.
With over 200 participants already registered, the community’s support is evident.
Whether running, walking, rolling, or strolling, participants will help make a tangible difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities right here in Central New York.
