Runners in Westmoreland County have traded their Valentine’s date-night outfits for athletic wear for the past eight years, opting for a morning 5K instead.
Cupid’s Chase, hosted by national disabilities nonprofit Community Options Inc., will kick off the Derry branch of its annual run at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, in Keystone State Park.
Attendees are given T-shirts with labels based on the relationship status they are in. “Available” runners receive a white T-shirt while “unavailable” runners receive a red T-shirt. The shirt is included in the $45 registration fee.
“I’ve heard stories from other regions where people met at a Cupid’s Chase race and dated. Someone from another state told me there was a couple that actually got married,” said Stephen Hall, executive director of Greensburg’s Community Options office.
The event will also feature giveaways; coffee and treats donated from Dunkin’ Donuts; food and water for runners, and raffles and rewards for winners.
Proceeds will go directly to supporting adults with intellectual disabilities. Funds go toward home upgrades, job assistance and more.
“Anybody can run anywhere but coming to our race, being able to support [a nonprofit organization] and have a Valentine’s Day theme to it gives it a little bit of a spark,” Hall said.
The race usually takes place at Legion-Keener Park in Latrobe but moved to Derry this year due to park upgrades. There are also Cupid’s Chase events in Butler, Pittsburgh and across 12 U.S. states.
Hall said the race usually draws about 100 people, but he aims to reach 150 this year.
Registration is available online at Runsignup.com/CupidsChase5kDerry up through the start of the race, or in person starting at 8 a.m. day of.
The event will take place rain or shine, and registration fees are nonrefundable.
